Your contact page is a really important page on your business website. You want it to inspire visitors to reach out and connect.
Why? Because at some point, visitors to your website will want to contact you to gather more information or to hire you. The primary purpose of most websites is to generate leads so you need to make it as easy as possible for visitors to contact you.
First impressions are so important – in person and online – so your contact page needs to make a great first impression on a potential client who is deciding if they want to work with you.
A good contact page can help you form a positive relationship. At the same time, a badly designed contact page can have a negative effect.
Since every business has a different personality, there is no one single template that can be used for a contact page. In fact, in some cases, a contact section is sufficient.
I would say that as long as visitors can find and understand how to contact you and you’ve made them feel welcome and appreciated, then it can be considered a successful contact page.
But there are definitely some things to consider when designing a contact page or even a contact section.
So, what makes a great contact page? Let’s dive right in…
While a contact page might not be the most informative or engaging page of your website, it still needs to be designed well and be consistent with your brand and the rest of your website. This means you should be using the same colors, fonts and images as on the rest of your website. You don’t want a visitor to think they’ve landed on an entirely different site by clicking your contact link.
Keep it simple and don’t confuse your visitor with too much unnecessary information. Don’t ask them to fill out too much information on a form. Keep contact forms simple. Only ask for the information you really need to know. You can get more details later. Simplicity is key. If it’s confusing, they’ll leave. And, keep contact and support separate!
You’ll want to show off your personality on your contact page. Designing with personality means the page is relatable and not cold and technical. This is especially important for a contact page because you want your visitors to feel welcome. You want them to feel positive and comfortable about getting in touch.
Aside from having an inviting look and feel, your contact page should also be usable. What this means is that your visitors should quickly be able to understand what their contact options are. Make sure your contact page offers multiple ways for a visitor to contact you. Forms and links should work so there is no frustration. All visitors are different and they will have different preferences for getting in touch with you. Some might prefer to call whereas others might prefer to get in touch via social media. So, make sure that your form is not the only way to reach you and that you include social media links.
Make sure that visitors to your website can easily find out how to contact you without having any technical issues. Make it easy for them to find your contact page. Have it in your main menu at the top of each page of your website. You can also have it in your footer menu. And, I recommend having a link to your contact page from every other page of your website. It’s even better if it’s always in the same spot. Also, make sure your contact page itself is mobile responsive as most visitors to your website will be looking at it on a mobile device.
OK, so a visitor to your site is on your contact page but they’re hesitant about filling out your form. They’re not sure they trust you. If they don’t trust you, they’re unlikely to contact you and will look for alternatives. To combat this, have some personal information about you on your contact page – even a photo. Tell the visitor what they can expect from you after they fill out the form. How long will it take you to respond to them? All of this helps to build trust and shows that you care. You can even explain why a visitor should reach out to you and offer answers to frequently asked questions.
A few other items worth mentioning are that if you have a physical location, it’s a great idea to include your address along with a map showing your location and with the option to get directions. Also, you can have a link to your calendar on your contact page if you want visitors to be able to book a call with you without you needing to be involved in the process.
Finally, your contact page is a great place to set expectations and create boundaries. You can share your business hours so visitors know when you’re available and when you’re not.
